“We are struggling to make the end of the season,” Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch told BBC Solent last night.

The south coast side have dropped into administration for the second time in three years last week and as Birch admitted “The cash available is worse than we first feared,” he suggested the Club may not make it to May.

Big sides that have entered administration in recent years have often come back stronger and began a march back up the leagues – Leeds, Leicester and Southampton being notable examples. Portsmouth, however, continue to sink.

It would be a huge shock for a Club of its stature to be dissolved and it remains unlikely, but in comparison to those above this is a quite exceptional case.

Aldershot and Maidstone both suffered that fate in the 1990s, unable to complete their fixtures, but they were still only small Clubs by the Football League’s standard – certainly much smaller than Portsmouth.

But should they go, what would be the consequences?

West Ham and Ipswich would be the biggest losers – dropping six points each, whilst Cardiff lose four and the likes of Birmingham, Leeds and Hull would all suffer the loss of three.

Pompey beat Burnley 1-0 in the only game between the two sides so far and so would lose no points, climbing two places in the table.

I wouldn’t wish it on their fans. It’s not their fault.

Not directly their fault, but they welcomed the FA cup win and playing in the prem on money that wasn’t theirs…

Wouldn’t wish their demise on Pompey fans. But, something has to be done about clubs being able to ‘select’ the timing of when they enter administration.

The latest edition of Private Eye has an interesting article on Glasgow Rangers and administration for anyone interested. For sure, these things aren’t the fans fault as a club goes into administration when it cannot meet it’s debts when they fall due. Surely nothing to do with a club’s fans.

Unless they’ve been staying away in droves, of course :-)

Whichever way you slice it, at 4 points adrift of Blackpool and Brum and one game less to play, even in this scenario, we need to get our arses in gear and have a run. It’s looking at 11 into six and that just won’t go…
