Burnley have won nearly two-thirds of the encounters between these two sides at Turf Moor, writes James Bird.
Last time out
Chris Iwelumo and Chris Eagles continued a good run together when both netted against the Tykes at Turf Moor in October 2010. They had shared the four goals in the Clarets’ previous win at home against Hull City and Eagles got the Clarets on their way as he fired home his first after 50 minutes. He would add to this just 15 minutes later as he converted a penalty after Nathan Doyle was judged to have handled the ball when blocking an Eagles cross. Iwelumo finished the game off with his goal on 82 minutes as a loose ball presented itself for the striker, who found the bottom corner from 12 yards out.
Burnley 3 – 0 Barnsley. 19 October 2010.
One for us
Wade Elliott and Kyle Lafferty scored the Burnley goals in an encounter that saw all three goals come in the first half. Elliott had just signed a new three-year deal at Turf Moor and proved why when he was released by a Robbie Blake pass before coolly finishing the chance to put the Clarets ahead. Lafferty had scored a brace for his country in a midweek international and he kept his scoring touch as he doubled Burnley’s lead just six minutes after Elliott’s 30th minute strike. He had collected the ball on the edge of the box and used a deft flick to turn his man before finding the bottom corner with a sublime finish. Brian Howard pulled a goal back for the visitors just before half time, but Owen Coyle’s side had enough about them to see the Tykes off.
Burnley 2 – 1 Barnsley. 29 March 2008.
One for them
Barnsley did the double over the Clarets during our promotion season. The Turf Moor tie came on Boxing Day as the Tykes dealt a blow to the Clarets’ promotion hopes. There was a minute’s applause that day for former Clarets captain Ray Deakin, who had sadly passed away on Christmas Eve. It didn’t take long for the visitors to put one past Brian Jensen as Jamie Cureton struck from 20 yards. He looked offside when before receiving the ball but with no flag he put the Tykes ahead. Chris McCann got the Clarets level on 38 minutes as he slotted home a Robbie Blake low cross at the far post. McCann cancelled out his own effort on 67 minutes as he steered a Jamal Campbell-Ryce cross beyond Jensen in the Burnley net to give Barnsley all three points.
